Stalin understood the power of education in society and he used it (in combination with a number of other tools of the state to modernize the Soviet Union and build it into a global super power.  In this unit we will explore the rise and rule of Stalin from 1924-1941.  Our unit will be shaped by the below key questions:

1. What were the conditions within and outside the Soviet Union that facilitated Stalin's rise to power?

2. What were the methods Stalin used to solidify his control over the Politburo and the Soviet state?

 

3. How did Stalin respond to opposition and to what extent did this response achieve totalitarian control?

4. What were the aims and impact of Stalin's domestic policies of the different elements of the Soviet state?

​

5. What were the successes and failures of Stalin's foreign policy and what impact did they have on his maintenance of power?

Resources: Our main text for this unit will be Martin McCauley's Stalin and Stalinism (available digitally and in hard copy in the library).  In addition to the text we will be drawing from a number of primary and secondary sources to help develop our historical evaluation of Stalin's U.S.S.R.
